No. 10325 Baldwin Class P-7d 4-6-2 Streamlined "Pacific" Type Steam Locomotive, heading up the "Cincinnatian" Streamlined Passenger Train

 Baltimore & Ohio Railroad

Following World War II, B&O turned to its Mount Clare shops to rebuild prewar heavyweight cars into streamlined cars.  Two 5-car trainsets were created, to be drawn by older Baldwin-built (1927) 4-6-2 "Pacific"-type Class P-7 "President" series steam locomotives with newly designed Royal blue bullet-nosed streamlined shrouding. B&O had used industrial designer Otto Kuhler for its streamlined locomotive designs, dating back to the mid-1930s. Kuhler had pioneered in the bullet-nose concept, and in the case of the four streamlined locomotives (Nos. 5301-5304)for the new "Cincinnatians," B&O chose as the designer one of Kuhler's dedicated disciples, Ms. Olive Dennis, B&O's and America's first female civil engineer.

These two streamliners, the "Cincinnatians," entered all-coach service on the B&O in January, 1947, one between Baltimore/Washington and Cincinnati by daylight, and the other to Chicago through Cincinnati from Baltimore/Washington. Throughout the day the "Cincinnatian's" observation-diner offered B&O cooking southern-style, including the train's specialty, spoon bread. When the "Cincinnatian" failed to attain its traffic projections, its equipment and name were transferred in 1950 to a more lucrative daylight schedule between Cincinnati and Detroit. The Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad gained control of the B&O in 1963, eliminating many of the B&O train names. The "Cincinnatian" was the first deluxe all-coach daylight streamliner between Baltimore/Washington and Cincinnati. No. 10325 shows train service *1947-1956, between Baltimore/Washington and Cincinnati (1947-1950) and Detroit and Cincinnati (1950-1956). The "O" gauge scale model train has 5 streamlined cars (No. 10326) by MTH and a detailed streamlined Baldwin-built Class P-7d 4-6-2 "Pacific"-type steam locomotive (No. 5304) by Weaver (No. 10325). For locomotive No. 5304 in a previous streamlined life, please see No. 10258 "Royal Blue"/"Abraham Lincoln,"1935-1939.

* The date 1956 is the year in which steam power was replaced by diesel locomotives.
