Circus Train 10188

1920s - 1930s
#1134 4-4-2 "Atlantic" Type Steam Locomotive
6-Car Set

No. 10188 #1134 4-4-2 "Atlantic" Type Steam Locomotive, heading up the "Circus Train"

In the late 1920s, Bridgeport-based toy train manufacturer Ives introduced a fantasy train in Standard gauge, the “Circus Train.” In those days, before talkie movies, television, and other hi-tech distractions, the circus was a big event, moving from town to town by rail with animals, trapeze acts, and clowns under the Big Top tent—great excitement for all when there was no other competition.

This is an extraordinary model train modeled loosely after Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey circus trains of that era. It is in Standard gauge like the original, a fine reproduction by MTH of the 1928-1930 Ives set. The locomotive is a reasonable facsimile of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s 1927 “President Washington” 4-6-2 Class P-7 “Pacific”-type steam locomotive Ives labeled its No. 1134, and the 6-car circus set features two flat cars with animal cages and animals, stock car with horses, flat car with ticket booths, box car, and combine car.
