Tampa Union Station
Tampa, Florida
The Italian Renaissance Station was designed by architect J.F. Leitner and built in 1912. Tampa Union Station was saved from deterioration and neglect in the mid-1980s through the actions of Tampa Union Station Preservation & Redevelopment, Inc., a local grass roots nonprofit preservation organization. This group purchased the 1.97 acre site in 1991 from CSX Realty with Funds provided by the city of Tampa, Hillsborough County, and Tampa Preservation, Inc. The station was renovated in 1998 at a cost of approximately $2.6 millon. Amtrak re-entered the station in May of 1998. The nonprofit turned over ownership to the city in 1999, but continues as managers. The original baggage building also built in 1912 is being renovated and was completed in the Spring, 2002. Long-term plans call for use by High Speed and Regional Rail and, if successful, by the 2012 Olympic Bid will be the primary station, serving a 110,000-person Olympic stadium on the adjacent corner.
