Like many communities in southeastern British Columbia, Revelstoke began in the 1880s as a transportation and supply center for the mining industry. This was soon bolstered by the construction of the transcontinental railway and the subsequent decision of the Canadian Pacific Railway to establish its main operations offices and maintenance facilities for the Shuswap and Mountain Subdivisions in Revelstoke.
In celebration of its railway history, a group of local businesspersons, rail fans, model railroaders, retired CPR employees, and members of the Selkirk Division of the Canadian Railway Historical Association dreamed of building a museum in Revelstoke. In 1992, the dream became reality when construction of the Revelstoke Railway Museum began. The building's design evokes the old CPR Revelstoke back shop and a stylized water tower. Construction of the main building was completed in 1993, and shortly after CPR Engine 5468 was brought across Canada by way of the CPR and many volunteers. Along with the 5468, CP Rail System donated Business Car 4; these two pieces of equipment are the centerpieces of the Museum's collection.
Discover Canadian Pacific history, fascinating exhibits, rolling stock, a model railroad layout, gift shop, kid's activity area, picnic facilities, and much more at British Columbia's premiere railway museum. Revelstoke, BC, Toll free 1-877-837-6060.
