Santa Fe (Amtrak) Depot
La Plata, Missouri
The Atchison Topeka $ Santa Fe Railroad built through La Plata in 1887. When the old depot was remodeled by ATSF, since it was wartime, it was essential that the troop trains were kept running. However, it was revolutionary as the station went from being a carbon copy of the past, to serving as a model for depot modernization programs everywhere. The Friends for La Plata Preservation restored it to that Art Deco style in 2001. Amtrak's "Southwest Chief," one of two in the state, still makes two daily stops in La Plata on its Los Angeles to Chicago route. It travels on BNSF tracks.
