Independence, MO
The Chicago & Alton Depot, in Independence, Missouri, is the oldest (1879) unaltered two-story depot in Missouri. At the turn of the century, 14 trains sporting names like "The Hummer" and the "Golden State Limited" stopped here daily before chugging West. In January of 1996, the Friends of the Chicago & Alton Depot moved the structure to the National Frontier Trails Center area where is was renovated for use as a museum and information center. Tours are conducted by volunteer docents. The Depot is now open for daily tours except Tuesday and Wednesday from April through October and will be open in 2005 the weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
